When you think of Star Trek, you have to think of Klingons. As the biggest antagonist to our Starfleet heroes, they became as much a part of the mythos of Trek as the Enterprise crew. In the TOS films (I-VI), the Klingons were the bad guys of choice, appearing in five of the six films.
And they had really cool props and costumes! As with Star Trek itself, my Klingon pieces are the yang to my Starfleet items' yin. You need one for the other to be fully realized.
I have Klingon pieces from The Original Series and three different films: Star Trek III, V and VI, including the Klingon uniform worn by Gorkon's aide – the General who crudely stuffed his mouth at the state dinner. It's in beautiful condition and looks like it was just made last week instead of two decades ago.
As for props, I have one of the coolest Klingon props ever – a TOS Klingon Disruptor pistol! This piece can be traced back to Dick Rubin, Prop Master on The Motion Picture back in 1978. It's got plenty of wear but is totally intact and is one of only four known to exist.
And what Klingon collection would be complete without numerous weapons? I've got two other classics – a Star Trek III style pistol and rifle Disruptor set. They show lots of use and age – just like any Klingon weapon should.
One of my most prized pieces is the handheld translator used by William Shatner as Kirk in the important courtroom scene in Star Trek VI. It is screen-matched to Shatner (ie, small flaws and details on the prop match the one shown on screen in his hand) and still has functional lights. It is a very rare thing to be able to relate a particular prop to any specific actor, let alone one of the stars, so I'm very fortunate to have such a piece. It is one of the only Star Trek props that can be directly matched to use by William Shatner. I also have the matching, functioning headset that was worn by the court translator.
In that same courtroom scene were hordes of riled Klingons all screaming for Kirk's blood. To achieve that scene, dozens of intricately detailed latex masks were created. In my specimen, you can see just how much work they put into these babies, including full wigs and hairy eyebrows. How'd you like to wear one of these for a ten hour movie shoot? No thanks!
Also in Star Trek VI, Kirk and McCoy were hauled away to the icy prison planet of Rura Penthe, "the alien geaveyard", and I have several pieces from that sequence including snow goggles, manacles and canteen.
As you're looking this section over, keep one last thing in mind – these pieces come direct from the Klingon homeworld of Quo'nos. Qapla'! Success!
